Frugality gets a makeover

For me, the word frugal evokes the image of a dowdy cat lady who pinches pennies. The word just isn't appealing, that is until author, journalist, and financial extraordinaire Natalie McNeal gave the word a makeover. The originator of the word "Frugalista" and creator of the blog The Frugalista Files has finally shown the world how to live life fabulously while on a budget.

I couldn't stop sending Natalie tweets when I first started reading through her book, The Frugalista Files.

What I love most about this book is that it isn't some stuffy lecture style Suzie Orman (yes I said it) book about financial responsibility. Instead it is one woman's journey to financial freedom while attending charity events, networking, looking great on a budget and hanging out with friends and family.

Like me, you may not have financial problems, so why read the book? This book fully encompasses what it means to go on a journey of any sort. Instead of focusing just on finances alone, Natalie takes us through her experiences in navigating her relationships with men, valuing her family & friends, and keeping her balance in an unsteady job market all while facing sky high bills. Some relationships changed while others were strengthened as she stopped leading a financially promiscuous lifestyle. This tongue in cheek book is peppered with suggestions that you can implement TODAY while trying to save a dime. Natalie cleverly weaves in the tips and tricks of saving money throughout this book without ever breaking the rhythm of her writing.

I like that it is also a book about a woman who briefly looks into her past to find out how she had landed herself in deep financial waters . She also had to make some tough decisions about living out what had become her vision for her life, versus staying in a somewhat predictable career path that would earn her a steady paycheck. Haven't we all been there a time or two? We can't all be a fly by the seat of your pants, Denise Huxtable type of gal, so throwing caution to the wind by jumping into a venture that may or may not pay your bills is frightening. Each section of this book is written as a page out of Natalie's diary with dates and all so you feel like a fly on the wall in her life.

I think everyone can benefit in some way from reading this book, it's a page turner!

Other Ramblings


I don't know about you but after watching Kenny AKA the BEAST in the kitchen on the show Top Chef, I was convinced that he was going to be in the final three. My final three dream team would have consisted of Angelo, Kenny and Tiffany.
Then all of a sudden things started to crumble, when Kenny thought he had a good dish, the judges quickly found faults. I think they were beginning to get annoyed at his level of confidence, what do you think? Was Kenny's "I'm a BEAST in the Kitchen" attitude too much for the judges to stomach? If he had pretended to be a bit more accepting of their criticisms do you think he would still be around?
Oh and for Tim, the guy who was in the contest cooking his heart out for his wife who had died...didn't it seem like he wasn't the best chef? Poor guy, I liked him though.
Who thinks Alex did steal Ed's pea puree? Raises hand!!!!!!!!
Who thinks Ed secretly likes Tiffany? Raises hand again.
Who thinks Angelo was somewhat into Tamesha? Raises hand then puts it down quickly...I'm not sure if Angelo was just trying to get her off of her game or if he really felt as much towards her as he had implied.
The Jersey Shore
The geniuses of the Jersey shore are now in Miami. Why oh why do I tune in to see these buffoons? I don't have an answer for that but for some reason, their rude behavior, elementary school jokes and stereotypical behavior makes me tune in each week. I'm ashamed to say it but it's true..lol.
Who agrees that all of the guys in the house are grenades? RAISES HAND...lol
For some reason Ronnie wants to hurt Sam as much as he was hurt by whatever went on between them off camera. He is not the fist pumping fool we watched last season. Now Ronnie is the guy who boozes it up whenever possible and tries to hold on to Sammy while connecting with other women in Miami.
I also think Jwow has not one good intention in her silicone filled body. I don't think she is writing that letter with Snookie in an attempt to warn Sammy about her relationship with Ron. Instead, I think Jwow is ready to see fireworks fly when Sammy eventually reads that anonymous letter that will reveal all of Ronnie's vile actions.
Later in the seasons it looks like there will be throw down between Jenny and Sammy....don't know about you but I'll be watching.
Essence.com
I've been reading Essence magazine for many years now and despite what others have to say, I still eagerly await my issue. If I were ever to be featured in Essence I would certainly be a happy camper. When Essence told the world that they would begin updating their site, Essence.com daily, boy was I happy. During my free time that was definitely one of the sites that I would check out and then it happened. Error after error after error would appear on their site. Now if you click back on my previous posts you are sure to find some things that can be cleaned up but this blog isn't my job in any way. However, the people of Essence.com do this for a livinggggggggggg. I am not as picky as some people but some of the mistakes that I have seen were just downright careless, as if no one took the time to simply read the text. With all of the mistakes that I had seen I was certain that Essence had hired Fantasia as their chief editor (I'm just saying) but alas this recent Essence mag. revealed the glowing faces behind the Essence.com postings and Fantasia was nowhere in sight.
The other thing that I noticed is that some of the comments from the writers had become a bit snarky. I remember seeing an unfavorable comment referencing Gabby S.'s weight and another on Chris Brown's BET Breakdown. I just remember Essence being a impartial voice that would state the facts and let the readers go at it but now things have changed.
Also some of the articles on Essence.com are just DUMB....really dumb (Antwon Dodson..lol sorry I had to do it).
Do you still read Essence mag or Essence.com?
Completely unrelated- I love China Glaze nail polish, it has a hardener and it lasts for a long time. hooray.

In The Theater
As I'm sure you know, Queen Latifah's latest flick, "Just Wright" opens in theaters today. Will you be checking it out? I know for a certainty that I am heading to the theater tonight to support this film.





On the Tube

I know I've never spoken of this show on my blog before but LOST is coming to an end. Lost is the most riveting series I think I've ever watched on tv. It has held my interest from season 1 and the episodes just get better as more information is revealed. Oh and when they killed off my Sayid......WHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Where has Ben been? I've lost track of him and I can't remember the last time I saw him on the island.
Any of you watching lost? How do you think it will all end?
A Family Business
Brandy and Ray J are siblings and the love is apparent but the divisive behavior of Momma Norwood is also clearly seen. She favors Ray J and she may not recognize how obvious her favoritism is....sigh. Ok going back one episode -when the stripper arrived at Ray's office the mother was so mad that Bandy and her dad however she wasn't upset with Ray J for allowing his friends to engage in such shenanigans at his place of business.


Even though Brandy at times has a strained relationship with her mother I didn't appreciate the mom not showing up to Brandy's performance because she was still upset over strippergate 2010. As I see it, if you are going to be both mom (can't change that) and manager, then when it comes to business you need to be there for your client even if you are upset with your daughter. The father loves to say he won't get between the two of them but he will listen to both sides. To that I say MAN UP, this is YOUR family too, you are not just an innocent unrelated bystander so speak up and do what needs to be done!
I also think that Brandy's friend Shay, needs to stay out of family affairs. She was asking Brandy if she thought it was time to separate the mom/manager role by finding another manager. In the end they are still a family and Shay you are NOT my dear. I can see that Brandy will always side with family and I totally understand that, so Shay needs to stay in her lane and just hear Brandy out when she vents. Did you notice how quickly Ray checked Shay when she tried to tell him about his inappropriate behavior...LOL.
What do you think of Bran Nu? Brandy as a rapper isn't something that I necessarily saw coming but I think she did a good job and her makeup was great when she performed at the House of Blues.


On a completely different note what is going on with Timberland's figure? He wears these t- shirts with his arms exposed and it looks like he lifts weights. Does he think the public believes those lumpy curves are muscles? I think NO Timbo. Any while we're on the subject Dark Child had on some ill fitting hip huggers when he attended the office party. When he walked away from the camera you saw his fluffy sections oozing out of his pants.....LOL.


What Chilli Wants


A little baby hair to the side never killed anyone but Chilli enough is enough. Moving on-

Chilli's quest to find a man stopped briefly last week as she went to see a therapist. She revealed a portion of her private life when she confessed that she had an abortion which she seems to regret. She then spoke about Usher and the fact that there were certain things she couldn't live with so the relationship had to end.
She takes her son out on dates so that she can groom him to be a great date when he enters that stage of his life. She told him not to "smack" while he was eating- did you catch that she too had some mouth wide open scenes while eating? Well I guess you want your kids to learn and do better so whatever.....

Nothing too exciting happened this episode.

Basketball Chicks on the side Wives
In the last episode the women revealed to Royce all that Gloria had said about her in an attempt to make Royce realize that Gloria is not a friend. Can we have the lady Suzie, (I think her names is) write down whatever she wants to say and then someone else can read it because her speech impediment is giving me a headache.

The kids went to LA with their mom to pursue their separate dreams- the son wants to be a singer while the daughter wants to be an actress. I will not talk about the children on this blog, so I will just move on in silence, but you all can read my thoughts right??? Ok good. lol

• and a book- it's not really a review but I'm just saying a few words about a book I am currently reading.

On The Tube
Last night while eating dinner, I decided to watch the new Tatiana Ali show which I had taped the night before. I think the show has potential but I literally laughed maybe 3 times and all three of those laughs were on shaky ground. I mainly laughed because the joke made me think of something else.... comedy #FAIL. The guy playing Tatiana's brother is corny along with the two corny neighbors who wear odd outfits. The random blond with the exploding chest is a #fail as well.
However as I mentioned the show has room for growth and the storyline has potential so you never know where things could go. I did like the episode where her best friend wanted to become more than friends, that episode was a ode to the movie brown Sugar. remember when Taye Diggs' character was going to get married the next day but had an almost moment with Sid played by Sanna Lathan. Ooops there I go again thinking of something else and not being focused on the new sitcoms storyline.
I will watch it again shoot I'll probably watch the entire season, maybe it has to grow on me. I hope the show does well.
Has anyone been watching Buppies? Honestly I think Tatiana should take over the writing on her new show and make it more like Buppies with a few tweeks here and there and we may have a winner.
For those of you who don't know, Buppies is like Friends but except all the characters are black and rich.

I want to thank the wonderful financial blogger Mrs. Money Savvy for the informative comment she posted yesterday. Check out her comment here "Well blogging proceeds are income and all income must be reported and taxed. If a blogger uses an advertising service (such as Google AdSense), that revenue will be reported to the IRS if above $600/yr. Bloggers should be aware so that they're not hit with an unexpected tax bill."

Clearly I am not included in this category since my google ads yielded all of .50 since the inception of this blog but this is just an FYI for the rest of you money makers out there.

Random
When I shop online whether it's for clothing, shoes or whatever I love to save money so I have no problem shopping the clearance sections. Another thing that I like to do is go to retailmenot.com to see if there are any coupons that I can use before making an online purchase. This site has helped me to get 20% off or free shipping etc. Hey it all adds up so go ahead and shop while saving.

Side note- I went into Neman Marcus yesterday and it seemed like there were red tags everywhere with the text 30% off....but when the price is $300-$400 30% off didn't seem so appealing. I saw a few pairs of shoes that looked like the shoes from my post a few days ago about shoes and I have to say in person I wasn't so impressed. I really looked at the quality of some of the shoes and knew that it wasn't worth $100. Especially when it came to a sandal with a REALLY thin sole and barely any fabric so I have crossed some of those shoes off my wish list. Well if the price is really low or I see a great yet inexpensive knock off then I will get it. I left NM without anything and I felt good about it. I think this financial/ clean sweep challenge has made me a more discerning consumer.
