What's That Smell? Schmidt vs. Tom's

The title of this post poses a question that I'm often asked after someone has hugged me or  come in close contact. On the occasions when I've been asked this question, people want to know what product I'm wearing as well as all of the necessary purchasing details. I purchased some hair perfumes which I hauled in a recent video, so suffice it to say that I like to smell good. Unfortunately, "what's that smell" is a question I asked myself twice this week when a less than pleasant scent assaulted my olfactory senses.

So the woman who likes to smell good offended herself, twice in one week, how does that happen? 

The Beginning 

The negative effects of aluminum in antiperspirants have always lingered in my mind during deodorant purchases, but I've continued to buy them for years. I've tried my share of natural deodorants and one after the other, they have failed me. Well four weeks ago I was determined to give natural deodorants another shot when I found the $10 jar of the Schmidt brand deodorant, sitting atop a shelf in a Ricky's NYC store.

I purchased the Bergamot and Lime scent which has a deliciously light citrus scent. I didn't even care that it wasn't packaged like traditional deodorant roll up sticks. Instead it was tightly packed into a glass jar, complete with a stick provided to assist in scooping out the product.

After scooping you're  supposed to rub the product  between your fingers to transform the crumbly substance  into a creamy paste.

I began using the product the day after I bought it, and I did so for approximately the next three weeks. It helped to keep armpit odors at bay, but another problem soon presented itself. As shown in the picture below, my armpits became discolored after three weeks and I experienced intermittent itching. Both problems were enough to cause me to put down the stick and discontinue using this natural deodorant.

I've had discolored armpits in the past when I used the Oyin Handmade's deodorant, so I'm confident that in a few weeks my armpits will be back to normal.  Schmidt didn't work out for me, but I wasn't jumping off of the natural deodorant train that quickly. After all aside from the discoloration, the the odor protection  provided by Schmidt was definitely acceptable.

Next, I  turned my attention to the Tom's brand of natural deodorant in the apricot scent, which I scored on sale for $3 from CVS.

It smells just like a bushel of freshly cut apricots, and that my friend is where the good times end. I used it all of this week, the fourth and smelliest  week of my  natural deodorant trial. Twice this week my own armpits  caused me to question which frowzy person entered my personal space, but alas I was the armpit offender. The natural ingredients can be found below.

Although Toms boasts 24 hour protection, it couldn't even get me through an 8 hour work day. My armpits didn't become further discolored and I didn't experience any itching, but the absence of odor protection forced me to throw in the towel.
You win aluminum I'll be back in your  clutches shortly, unless someone out there has a great natural deodorant recommendation.... I'm all ears.

Did you watch the Reunion of the Jersey Hoodrats Housewives?

Through this whole season I have become increasingly annoyed with Jacqueline. She has zero control over her daughter who constantly disrespects her and then she tries to defend her daughter's dumb actions.

I really don't like any of the women on the show but they are entertaining. Teresa was trying to downplay her financial woes, but clearly she is in deep! I secretly think she made Dina the godmother of her kid because she wanted some connection to that family. Why does everyone try to hang on to Caroline's family like they are the IT family in Franklin Lakes?

Caroline just knows she is the head chick in town and she is sooooo NOT. I need Caroline to have a seat, to me she is dry and boring...I don't care that your kids have grown up and you feel somewhat lost...get a job or clean your huge house..just don't appear on tv anymore.

Danielle is the nut job of the century who hopefully won't make her kids nutty too. She is needy, pushy and a fruit cake. I will forever be haunted by that dancing scene that she did where she stretched out her leg and then said "and then suggest". If you watched the season, you probably vomited right along with me.

Anywhooo on the reunion show all of the women were against Danielle and tried to call her on her lies but in the end they made peace #kanyeshrug.

Well all except for dried up Caroline, who seems to think she looks good in the color blue...ummm no you don't dear.

When Jacqueline decided to squash the issues that she had with Danielle, all of a sudden Teresa decides to chime in by saying that she was never trying to take Danielle down. Ummm ok this was a moment between Jaqueline and Danielle so no need to start pouring our your hear Teresa because no one asked you and Danielle wasn't even looking your way. I think teresa will go any way the wind blows and if the clan starts talking to Danielle so will she. These are grown women who can't seem to think for themselves (except for Caroline and Jacqueline for a VERY brief moment).

I heard that Danielle won't be back next season because she wants her own spin off show, and with all of her crazy antics she will probably get it.

Oh and I just have to talk about Ashley (Jacquline's daughter) for a minute- I think she feels the need to be accepted by the Manzo (sp) family. I think a part of Ashley feels as if she was never really IN the family even though her step dad treats her as if she were his own. I notice that she listens to her cousin, and aunts more than her own mother. Shoot, even her boyfriend has more pull over her than her mother does. I also think she has a bit of low self esteem.

For Teresa, I think the Countess from Housewives of NY said it best when she said "Money Can't Buy You Class".

OHHHH and how could I forget about Kim G who we learned is related to the other Kim (the store owner who danielle felt betrayed her). Since both ladies seem like snakes, it's almost fitting that they are related through marriage. I don't care for Kim G and I agree with Danielle that it seemed like Kim G wanted air time and attention from the Manzos- pathetic.

Now we are down to the final three and the final woman has been ousted from the cast. Now we have the boys club in full swing with Kevin, Angelo and Ed. As I mentioned in a previous post, I want Ed to win- who do you want to win Top Chef?

Skin MD Naturals -Did it work?

If you have dry skin you have likely scoured countless store shelves looking for your bottled cure for dry skin. I know I've tried many products, each time hoping I could scratch of "dry skin" on my list of things I'd rather not have. Product after product failed to deliver the moisturizing goodness I so desire. The people of Skin Md kindly sent me the paraben free Skin MD shielding lotion. It is supposed to improve the hydration of your skin. This product is referred to as the shielding lotion because it is supposed to shield your skin from things that can irritate it, while allowing moisturizing properties to seep through.
Here is what I love about skin MD:
No animal products or testing
• Dermatology tested
• Fragrance and colorant free
• Hypoallergenic
• Paraben free
• Non-comedogenic
It also contains chamomile, aloe leaf extract and vitamin E.
The lotion is very creamy and thin in consistency, it is almost feels like water when I apply it to my hands. I should also tell you that this product can be used from your face down to your feet.
I have seen some really great reviews of this product, but I had a mixed personal experience. This lotion is said to be so powerful that it is able to help pamper the skin of those who have psoriasis and eczema. Since I don't have such skin ailments I was excited to have possibly identified my winning product.
A mysterious dry patch appeared on one of my wrists a few months ago, it's just this one area that is drier than every other inch of skin on my body. Perhaps a chemical burned that area of my wrist, I don't know but whatever it was, that persistent dryness was killing me. If I put lotion on my hands, that area on the back of my wrist would be the first section to become ashy. I applied the Skin MD and I can tell you that the mysterious dry patch is HISTORY. I don't know where it came from but I know that it responded quite well to the Skin MD formula.
Although this part of my hand had been cured, every other section of skin on my hands did not respond well to the Skin MD natural lotion. The dry patch was well moisturized while the normal/dry sections were drier than the Sahara dessert. My hands were very ashy. I thought it could possibly be my unique skin so I allowed others to use the product and they received the same results, dry skin. I used the product on my face and I had smooth flake free skin.
This product has totally confused me, working for some sections of skin but not others. I guess my search continues. Have you tried Skin MD naturals?

No Bliss, Check the nails, Lets get married and Diddy

Bliss got my $18 with this oh so ordinary body wash, but they won't get me again. I purchased the 16 oz lemon sage body wash because the bottle explained that I was getting more for my buck and that the product is really sudsy...ok Im easy to please..lol. The scent gives you a hint of lemon but then that sage comes right around to punch me in the nose. I don't care for the scent and the body wash is not super sudsy, it's a regular old body wash and in my book not worth $18.00. I should note that this sulfate body wash (sulfates are common in body washes) is paraben FREE and includes aloe vera juice. Of course Bliss slipped in some blue dyes and other chemicals to round out their ingredient list.
So yup this is another product for the SKIP IT files. I have tried other things from Bliss but in general this company does not impress me. Nevertheless I plan on hitting up the Bliss spa this summer in NYC. Is there anything from the Bliss line that I need to check out???

Nail Check Antique Rose by Essie is the color that I am wearing in this picture. In person the color really looks like rose gold, so I like it. Ignore my sloppy application please..lol. This bottle costs roughly $8.00.
Let's get Married
There are two segments that I LOVE from Essence.com- 1) The annual - Will You Marry Me? videos where men propose to their lovely ladies on camera. We get to vote for the pair we love and the couple with the most votes will win a wedding package which usually includes a great honeymoon and other treats.
The second segment that I love is 2) 30 Dates in 30 Days which Essence only ran once- If anyone from Essence is reading this post (doubtful lol) PLEASE bring back this segment, it was oh so enjoyable. Essence would take women and fix them up with bachelors and show the dates online. The viewing audience would vote and select each date for the women. The women also had an opportunity to be styled before each date so that each woman would look fierce from head to toe!

Who Wants to Work For Diddy?
Well I know I certainly don't want the position but clearly there are many out there clamoring to be Diddy's assistant. Last night the final battle was fought between Ebony and Dan. They battled task for task in an attempt to outshine each other and impress Diddy. Diddy had them perform a myriad of tasks throughout the day to see how competent they were and to assess their flexibility,and overall potential. Both contestants had their shortcomings and showed that they would both require refinement before being thrust into the thick of things at Bad Boy, but in the end Ebony prevailed. Much to my surprise Dan was sent packing, I really thought he would take the crown as Diddy's new assistant.
I didn't expect to feel this way at the end but after watching the final episode and looking at the areas where Ebony fell short, I really thought she was going home jobless. While Dan certainly doesn't know everything he does have a certain level of general office etiquette which can not be taught easily. For example when Ebony decided to stroll around the Bad Boy office without shoes I was appalled. First of all you know that the final challenge will require you to run your bones all over NYC so why appear in heals and a pencil skirt?????? So when her feet could no longer stand up to the pressure, those shoes hit the bricks and she kept it moving. Dragging her bare toes across the floor grrrrrrrrr. Imagine if an important client or better yet DIDDY caught you walking around like that (he did by the way and wasn't pleased) that in my book is a common sense NO NO. Also Diddy gave her a simple test which I thought she would breeze through but again I was wrong. He gave her a list of names (first and last) and asked her to get the people on the phone on his behalf. However, before allowing this contestant to waltz out the door he asked her what she would say on the phone. One person on the list was Tracy Edmonds (the ex wife of Babyface) and Ebony said I would say " Hello can I speak to Tracy". I wanted to reach through the tv and grab Ebony. Of course Puff grilled her and told her that executives shouldn't be addressed by their first names etc. Did she think she was calling her bff? Gee whiz. Anyway congrats to Ebony. Perhaps she was just nervous during the final challenge, but I think she has a great deal of potential and I wish her the best.
Why do you think she won? I have my theories..lol

Tawaka body care and Tarte's 2 in 1

This video features an antioxidant rich cream by Ojon and a 2 in 1 product from Tarte.
The Tawaka product must be thrown into my SKIP IT FILES. Despite the natural antioxidant filled ingredient list, this product fails to deliver moisturized skin.
The ever so annoying two in one lip product from Tarte is also on whomp whomp status, a purchase I will never make again.

Giving the Acids a try and tips from a pro

Although I say it on the video I just wanted to say that I hope you had a chance to catch Dr. Oz on the Oprah show. He always gives out such wonderful information.
For great skin he said you need to take in vitamins A, C and E because they will give you your main antioxidants. If you recall, a while back I raved about my turbo C powder by Philosophy. The turbo boost is pure vitamin C which you mix in with your moisturizer.
Dr. oz also said that when you purchase products with vitamin A you may see the words retin a or retinol, that's what you need to look for.
You also need to take in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Today in the video I reviewed the Oyin Honey Hemp conditioner, and I spoke about my silk amino acids and honeyquat. I also discussed Dr. Oz's hair test.

Another Natural Deodorant & Other Random Items

LaVanila produces a line of natural deodorants for $18.00. I give more details on the video to follow but this is not a natural deodorant that I would buy again. I had zero coverage so this was pretty much useless to me. However, unlike the Lush aromacream deodorant this product did not make my skin itch so that's a good thing.
This product must go into the "SKIP IT" files.
