No Standing Ovation

I will let you in on a little secret, some women want their hair to grow and they will go through non traditional measures to get that growth. A line of products exist for horses that women have been using to make their hair grow. I knew immediately that this product would never touch my hair but I still followed the progress of some women and they indeed experienced growth, fast growth. One of the popular bottles mentions that it will make your animals coat shiny and the HOOFS will grow much faster. I kid you not, when I read that I just about passed out.
Personally I think my hair grows at the normal rate (about 1/2 inch each month) and I'm happy with that but as you know I started taking biotin to see what other results I could gain in a healthy way.
My sister went and bought Ovation, which is from the same company that created all of the products for horses. I got on my soap box and told her we should never try anything intended for animals when she informed me that Ovation was created for humans. Out of the demand for a line for humans the company created ovation which is supposed to be a healthy line that will make your hair grow faster, and stronger. I was super skeptical but I went to the website to read the testimonials (which I knew would be positive) and I read more about the product. I then did searches online and on message boards to see what results women received. I also checked for those who had been using it for a while to see if any side effects became evident. I mean how often does a company directed at animals create a hair care line for women. I didn't want to wake up to discover I was growing a tail or something crazy like that..lol

Everything seemed to check out so I decided to give Ovation at least one try. I washed with the shampoo and it has Sodium Laureth Sulfate (also found in your typical body washes and hand soaps) which I stay away from but I wanted to use the entire line to get a feel for the product. After using the blue shampoo of death, my hair felt completely stripped, I mean like one of those cars you may have passed by on the street that sit high atop bricks no wheels no car doors, nothing, just a shell of what it used to be. My hair was NAKED!
In short, I hated it and knew that I would never use it again, it was squeaky clean which actually isn't a good thing, you never want your hair to be stripped of all it's natural oils.
Then on to the cell therapy product which I kept on my hair for over an hour (that is for intense treatment) and then the final product called the cream rinse.

When I washed it all out, I almost headed back to the shower to drown my hair in Aveda damage Remedy but I decided to ride it out to see what mess my hair would look like, I wanted PICTURES of the disaster.
I had the hardest time parting my hair which the company promised would be soft - NOPE rough and tough. So I didn't part my hair I just tried to separate it as best I could and roll it, it may have been the sloppiest rollerset I have ever done. SOrry to keep making Aveda comparisons but once I use Aveda I can part my hair and it is really soft, so easy to get through even when I am weeks and weeks post relaxer.
I sat in rollers waiting for it to dry and as it dried it became SHINY and SOFT. HUH? How did that happen? I was really surprised.

End Results- Never will I use the shampoo again but I will use the cell therapy to see if it makes it grow faster (my little test) in between my regularly scheduled Aveda washings. Aveda has done for my hair what no other product line has done, so I will be a loyal customer but I am not afraid to try new things every now and then.

The next day my hair was soft, shiny very bouncy and my curls held up very well.

Ovation Shampoo- $24.95
Ovation Cell Therapy- $56.95 (this one is for growth)
Ovation Creme Rinse$29.95
Have you ladies tried Ovation?
What is the worst hair product you have ever used? Any reviews you would like to share?

I can't remember the last time I even used regular shampoo. I clarify about once every 2 months and co-wash almost daily. I can cosign on the Biotin though. I did see pretty good growth while I took it. It broke me out so I left though.

I used that horse shampoo when I was younger! My mom thought they were joking with the horses on the bottle and the babysitter kept telling her to try it. When my mom realized she was using horse products on her kids she felt so bad, lol. I don't think I'll try this one though, I'll stick to the organic stuff.

Hey PJD,

I have a product question totally unrelated to the post. Sorry. Anyway, I got a major tan in portugal, despite my neutrogena 70 spf. Anyway, I think the tan is fading unevenly, as I've noticed some light spots on my face. I've always had even skin so it's kind of shocking. I'm using an even skin cleanser from ambi and moisturizer from aveeno, drinking water, etc. Are there any other products that you think might be helpful to even out skin?

you know how i abhor sulfates, but your hair looks great in them rollers girl!

Mrs. Brookaltimore said...

I know of the horse shampoo and con you are referring to and I am right there with you, girl. I could not in good conscience purchase that and use it. I mean, how could I even complain if I had some horrible adverse effect to it? I mean, it's intended for horses and last I checked I wasn't a horse. lol.. I've heard about the OCT too but I didn't know it was from the same company. I dunno, I think I'm still chicken and just sticking to multi vits and one Biotin daily. I'm still very eager to see your progress.

Product Junkie Diva said...

@Amina thanks
@B I really hate sulfates and I don't use them but I wanted to be fair so I decided to use the entire line to see what it would do to my hair. Trust me i will not use it again..lol Back on my no sulfate bandwagon.
@Just W. no problem. I will continue to use cell therapy and that has no sulfates so I will keep you up to date with my progress.
@Jamie yes but you can probably skip the shampoo.
@RenRen exactly...no shampoo should strip your hair ever.
@Jamila how fast did you see the growth after taking biotin.
@TM are you referring to mane and tail? I know that mane and tail had horses on it but i was always under the impression that it was for humans..who knows. But there is another company that is strictly for animals...interesting right? Organic is great...I am with you.
@traveldiva -this will be the topic for tomorrows post. Please feel free to write in at any time about anything.
@DE thanks I hate sulfates too...just horrible.
@Mrs.B Eqyss makes mega tek and ovation as well as other products. At least ovation is for humans...LOL
I will keep you posted on the progress.

I have being using ovation therapy for over a month as directed. I have found less breakage and length retention which equals more length.I think what does not work for you may work for others and I have found this useful to curb the PJ in me.After the ovation therapy system my hair feels soooo soft I cannot keep my hand off my hair. This product is definitely in my keep pile. One other thing I have read so much about SLS in shampoos and conditioners. Sometimes I think this might just be a little overrated!.Fricasis

@TM yikes...thanks for the info.
@Anonymous you are so right, I say that all the time, what works for one person may not work for another. I know people that use a ton of sls products but if I person were to blind fold me and put sls in my hair I could tell in a minute flat. There is such a big difference in sls poos vs. no sls. Usually after I have an sls poo it is really hard for me to comb through my wet hair....and it has that too clean feeling.. Oh well

@Anonymous yes ovation did make my hair soft and shiny.
However I get that from Aveda without the feeling of being stripped which is why I am pretty sure I'm done with ovation.

Not sure if you're aware of this, but Aveda products have sulfates and parabens in them. Check the ingredients.

Product Junkie Diva said...

@Anonymous Thanks, actually not all of Aveda product have sulfates. The shampoo and conditioner from the Dry remedy line and the damage remedy line are sulfate free. Those are the two main things that I use from Aveda.
Thanks though and if you see some sulfates in products that I write about please let me know. I do read labels but have an extra pair of eyes wont hurt..lol

So I am dying to know how your hair feels when mixing the Ovation Cell Therapy Cream Rinse with your everyday Aveda hair care. The only reason I have been looking into buying this product is because my hair is in such bad shape and it has just stopped growing. I am going to go try your Aveda line but I am still very interested in knowing about the cream rinse. How do you like it? Could you in fact see a difference with your hair growth? I am dying to fix my hair and hope you have a solution. Thanks!

I ordered Ovation Tuesday evening and I just received the product today, Friday. If you order this product don't bother paying extra for two day shipping. It ships pretty fast.

I ordered this product because I have chemically treated hair and my hair just stops growing after a certain length due to breakage. It won't grow longer then my bra line and it's pretty thin. Its damaged due to continuously having bleach highlights but I'm a sucker for light hair. I am Hispanic and have naturally curly hair that I blow dry once a week. In the shower my hair does fall out a bit. So, I do suffer from slight hair loss that's why I decided to give this product a try. I have to warn you...it's expensive. The hair therapy package with shipping and tax cost around $102.00.

Regarding Ovation- Product Junkie Diva is right on about the feeling you get after you use the Ovation shampoo. Your hair does feel striped. Right now, I have the cell therapy on my hair. I'm using it as a deep conditioner as recommended. The instructions say the longer your hair absorbs the cell therapy the better the results. I did notice that I used a lot of cell therapy product to cover my hair. Just an fyi. Good think I wash and blow dry once a week, if not, this product would go fast. In looking back I think its better just to purchase the cell therapy only and not the whole package. I'll send you updates on my progress. We'll see if this stuff really works.

Overall - if you do decide to try it..just purchase the cell therapy.

I have been using OVATION for at least 6 mos and have noticed my hair growing quickly. I only use the Cell Therapy. I wash and condition with regular shampoo and conditioner, then spray a mixture of the Ovation Cell Therapy and water on my head and sleep in it. I rinse in the morning and my hair is silky smooth. Just wish it wasn't so danged expensive! I also have used it with regular conditioner and it is just a lil boost.

why is everyone freaking out so much about a horse shampoo?? it's not like you're eating it. horse hair is almost the same as human hair, it's just a little coarser. so if anything, the conditioners have to be even stronger.

i work in a store that sells horse grooming supplies, and non horse people come in all the time to buy hair conditioners and liniment for sore muscles. there is one leave in conditioner that is amazing. i always have a bottle in my bathroom, and anyone who tries it can't believe it's for horses.

you guys are all missing out.

I'm a Flavor Chemist, and my ex-husband is a Cosmetic Chemist. When we were married, he formulated and made all of my hair and skin products especially for me. I also have horses, as do most of my friends. When we see that a mane and tail product makes our horses' hair soft and silky, we try it on ourselves; no harm. The ingredients are virtually the same as those used in "human grade" hair products, so don't fret, or be afraid to use them. Remember Mane and Tail Shampoo and Conditioner for horses? They were made for horses, and still are pretty popular products with humans.

Product Junkie Diva said...

Hi! I just heard about the Ovation hair product. I'm a 44 yr. old female who is genetically experiencing thinning of my already babyfine hair. What I would love to know is if you have success with this product and then quit using it, will the new hair you got to grow fall out? I believe there are other products on the market that you can use and grow new hair in bald or thinning spots but once you stop using it, it all comes out. I don't want to be suckered into forever buying this product to keep what I got to grow but to use it as needed or wanted without losing it. Thanks if anybody knows.

I have a question. 3 years ago I was diagnosed as Hypothyroid and one of the symptoms is hair loss ... OMG is one of the symptoms hair loss!!! My hair is very long (middle of my back) and actually grows very quickly. What I want to know is if the Ovation Cell Therapy product will actually promote new growth.

When I pull my hair back into a pony tail or a bun, I have to check the back for the place where my hair has separated and the scalp is showing through. I hate it!!!!

Any advice or knowledge ya'll wanna pass along ... appreciate it!

Anonymous said...

I have read with other products like Nioxin, that alot of people experience hair loss initially because it is getting getting rid of hair that you are going to lose anyhow to help promote new growth faster than waiting for it to fall out by itself.
I just recently started Nioxin because BeautyBrands has a 50% sale right now on it. :::crossing fingers it works:::

Anonymous #1 I have not heard of anyone having hair loss after they have stopped using the product. You may want to check on hair boards like forum.blackhairmedia.com and ask the ladies who use it there..or try the social network KISS (you can link to the Kiss blog on my blogroll then connect to her social network). I hope this helps
Anonymous #2 no problem any time.
No More Party System I knwo that it promotes hair growth but with the condition you mentioned (and I hope you are doing well) I am not sure how this product will respond in helping you. I will make this question a post for next week and hopefully others will share their knowledge. Here are my thoughts- as long as your scalp isnt damaged new hair should still be able to grow perhaps (and of course check with your doctors first) you can up your dosage of biotin which our bodies need. Biotin has been known to promote hair growth as well.
Anonymous I hope it works out well for you. Please let me know how things turn out in months to come. i stopped with the ovation becaues even if that hair was going to come out eventually i certainly didnt like seeing it all at once...lol so i had to cut ovation and i will never buy it again. However it did make my hair mega shiny :-).

I heard about this product on the radio, and it sounded too good to be true. I originally thought that this product was for men because the guy never mentioned women. It wasnt till I visited the site, that I found that it was for both men and women. After reading your review, I think I may stay away from the product until more real testimonies such as yours come out. Thank you for giving us the real. I am a caucasian 40 year old female and have all of a sudden experienced thinning, dry hair and ANNOYING hair licks...the short hair under my long strands that come out of nowhere. I believe stress plays a part as well (in my thinning hair). Skeptical about using the Ovation Hair Therapy but I am tired of my horrible looking hair. Any words of advise out there? Is it something, like others have asked, that I will have to be stuck using forever or there will be a reverse effect? What vitamins can I take to help?

Anonymous said...

I purchased the full Ovation line and started using it on 6/4/09. I am so disappointed with the whole product, yes the shampoo did strip my hair, and even with the cell therapy and the creme rinse it was difficult to get a wide tooth comb through my hair. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt so I continued to use it, along with a test. Upon my first use my hair came out in my hands while I showered, so I dated it and bagged it, every time I used it the same thing happened. I have a plastic bag with a date written on it along with all the hair that I have lost while using the product. Needless to say that I am a little ticked off. They say that you can return the product for a full refund for up to 1 year after the date of purchase. I have decided to return it, it cost around $104.00 that's a lot of money to pay for a hair product and find your hair sitting in a baggy. Also my hair feels dry and I've seen no speedy hair growth at all. My advice to the person who is having problems loosing her hair, first see a doctor to determine the real cause behind the hair loss, then look at legitimate solutions such as Minoxidil, it really does stop your hair from falling out. You do not have use it twice a day once at night is ample. Also you do not have to purchase the Rogaine for women, Target's own brand is exactly the same and works exactly the same. You will see results. Stay away from so called "pills" that claim to help your hair grow they do not work. So to re-cap this: Forget the Ovation it does nothing. See a doctor and go from there. Minoxidil works. Pills do not. Also take biotin daily. I hope this helps.

Very useful reviews; i was thinking about buying Ovation system to try but after the reading I am definitely stayng away. I am a caucasian female, 45 years old. I have a lot of hair that are subject to a lot of abuse, such as flat iron, curling iron, highlights, colorings, you name it. I am just lucky to have this much hair. However, it grows very slowly...very! I have found two supplements that work great for hair growth (please note: not re-growth, I don't think they will do anything for re-regrowth):
the first one is my favorite and it is found at Trader Joe's (yep, you heard it right) and is called Women's Formula Multivitamin & Mineral supports nails, hair and skin. It really promotes hair growth and also makes your nails white and strong. The cost is under $10 for a 100 tablets. The second one is found in Whole Foods (or Jimbo's) and is called Selica. Selica goes for $30 or so; have not bought it for a while. Just my 2 cents.

I have been using Ovation Cell Therapy for 6+months. I only use the cream rinse between my own shampoo and conditioner. I am 40 yrs old, very fine hair, have never been able to grow it long and OCT made a HUGE difference within a couple weeks. Compared to my previous texture, I consider my mane to be horse-hair thick and no longer need to use curling iron and other hair products (gels, mousse, etc.) It just feels healthy! I think it just depends on your hair type.

Hi i've been using ovation and is the best thing that ever happen to me. my hair starting falling 'cuz of so much stress that i have to bust a britney spears move and chopped my hair off (i didnt shaved my head) i used to have a georgeous long hair. then i started stressing out going thru some family dificulties and i got tired of seeing my hair falling off everyday. it was like if i was doing kemotherapy (no kidding) my husband is the one who bought it for me and my hair is been growing fast, strong very shiny. i use the whole product line and i love it. if you only use it for the first time you are not going to see good results but after the 4th use you will see the results you want. is expensive but worth it!

Product Junkie Diva, I used the Mega Tek, I mixed mine with castor oil, aloe vera gel, evening primrose oil, olive oil, coconut oil and I took garlic supplements to stop shredding, I used it from August 2008 to June 2009, applying it twice daily in my scalp and daily rinsing my hair, every morning. I left the Mega Tek on the whole head, for 5-10 minutes as a deep condition once a week. Also I put a very very small amount as my daily rinse. It was wonderful. I have been natural now for seven years plus, my hair stretched wasn't plus my collar bone, now stretched it is and I can hold the back of my hair. It was a wonderful product, I stopped, because I was in the middle of moving, so I could not keep up with the method. However I have started again, using the product this time, I have added a little garlic paste and eseential oils to mask the garlic smell. I am not taking any garlic supplements, and I hope to try the Ovation cell range. So I am looking forward to having some excellent results.

I tried the CELL THERAPY and liked it as a nice conditioner for my curly, dry, baby-fine hair that is now thinning out. It smells kind of obvious...it's coconut-like. Now when I went to re-order, I realized that with the shipping and tax, you pay $80 for a 12 oz. bottle. THAT it is not worth. --Smart Career woman in San Diego

I have been using ovation for over a year. I love the products. My hair was a hot, damamged mess before finding the product. My hair texture has completely changed. It is more manageable, holds curl and flat iron styles longer. I also noticed that I do not have to relax my hair as often as I used too. My aunt who lost all of her hair fighting cancer is now using the product and I've never seen her hair look better in just a three months of use. It grew back so soft, curly and pretty. I will use this product as long as I can afford it. The shampoo does leave you hair feeling a bit stripped, but the cell therapy will bring it back to life. The trick it to apply the cell therapy to the scalp and work it to the ends. Massage the scalp a bit then apply the cream rinse over the cell therapy and leave in 30 minutes. If you can leave it in all day or overnight even better.

Old school- Yes, I would suggest you check around for other reviews too. Also remember what doesn’t work for one person may work quite well for you, you just never can tell sometimes. I wish you the best on your hair journey.
Ivy hair goes through cycles while it is growing, it also has rest periods as well. Shedding is a very natural part of the hair growth process, but the hair failing out (shedding) does not mean that the new hair will grow in at a faster rate. What I was specifically speaking of in this video is that I noticed more hair than usual leaving my scalp which didn’t sit well with me. Regarding the cell therapy I finished that bottle and never purchased it again. I couldn’t really tell if it made my hair grow, I really think I would have needed more bottles to test things out in terms of hair growth.
Hello Anonymous- I should first attempt to see how much hair is leaving your head. If it is an unusual amount of hair loss I would suggest seeing a doctor because hair loss can be a sign of other issues. If it is just regular hair loss then there are certain things that you can do. I am not a doctor or a hair care specialist but I know that biotin is a pill that many women take in order to keep their hair strong and growing. Biotin can be found in those general pills like centrum etc. but some ladies take pure biotin pills to increase their biotin intake. Also if you scroll up to the other comments that I posted you will see that some of the recommendations include using sulfate free shampoos so you are no longer stripping your hair and lay off of all heat styling like blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons etc.
Anonymous, thanks for sharing your experience.
Anonymous, thanks for sharing that trader Joes information!
Komplicated- I will shoot an email your way. It would be helpful to know what you are doing with your hair as a part of your hair care regimen. I will you to get answers to certain questions and hopefully I can help.
Anonymous, I speak about thicker hair in this post http://productjunkiediva.blogspot.com/2009/10/video-response-singer-and-poetry.html
Anonymous- some people have found success with the product, although I did not. If you ever decide to try it, please let me know how it works for you.
Jan in San I’m happy that ovation is working out well for you.
Anonymous I see another satisfied customer . Its interesting that you got results after the 4th bottle, I only used the one bottle and stopped but Im glad it worked for you.
Valeries world I have heard great things about mega tek - I hope your positive hair growth.
Anonymous, yes it is not a cheap product line.
Casundra Its great that this line has transformed your hair.
Anonymous personally I would increase my biotin intake, use sulfate free shampoos and really get my hair as strong as possible. Perhaps you will even beging seeing sections if not all of your hair grows in stronger and possibly faster. Adding a chemical to your stressed hair may not be the best idea at this time. I would wait it out a bit before placing strong chemicals like a perm back in your hair. Then once your hair is stronger then I would use the OCT if you decide to use that line of products. Now for your other question, oct before or after the perm. I would strengthen my hair and once I am comfortably on the road to nice strong hair I would use OCT to see how it reacts on my head and if things still look positive them I would instroduce the perm to my hair.
I hope this help and thanks for reading everyone.

Would you recommend the Cell Ovation Therapy for a child? We're not experiencing any hair loss nor does she have a chemical relaxer. It just seems to grow slowly. Right now I've been using Redken products and Wild Growth Oil which seems to make it more manageable. I've read on the website that all the ingredients are natural and have even asked representatives for the company the same question and their response was yes. What do you think?

Regarding the Ovation product, seems to me that the shampoo strips your hair in order for the conditioner and therapy to attach itself to it. Sort of like when one gets fake nails. Your natural nail must be roughed up in order for the acrylic to hold. Why doesn't someone from the company answer these questions? Haven't we all learned, given the current situation this country is in, that honesty is the best policy?

Old School C said...

Nobody is being honest, especially in the current state of this country. Politicians are dirty, the FDA is dirty, our food industry is dirty, and so are these advertisers trying take take your money. Instead of "Change" things are getting worse. Its up to us to be careful and keep our wallets on lock. This Ovation company could probably give a rats toot what we put in our hair, they just want the money. There are much better shampoos & conditioners out there that are MUCH CHEAPER. Design Essentials is what I use and its just off the chain.

Hi PJD I was wondering which Aveda products you use and like best. My hair is VERY damaged from coloring, styling etc what would you suggest?
Thanks!

Anonymous- no I personally wouldnt recommend this product for a child. I would suggest going the naturla route when it comes to products. How about an all natural shampoo like one from karen's Body beautiful. Also if her hair grows slowly you may want to just make sure you are not putting heat oh her hair or using sulfate products which can make the hair weaker becuase it's stripping it of the things it needs.
Upscale- if you give it a try please let me know how it works for you.
Amanda- i never had a chemical color process but may people feel that the products used for chemically treated hair can double for those who have colored hair. The reason is because both a color process and a perm, for example, involve putting harsh checmicals on the hair. Aveda has products specifically for color treated hair but I've enver used it. i would certianly say you should try the Aveda damage remedy whcih I have used and really like. The main thing that you want to keep in mind is that you want your hair to be well moisturized to counteract the dryness that will come as a result of chemical treatments.
Also staying away from sulfates wont hurt.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for reading ladies.

I was sucked in and tried it, two of my friends tried it and said "bah, not sure" but I thought I'd give it a try as their hair was fried from dying and heat tools. I didn't do the shampoo and conditioner, I use Paul Mitchell or something. I washed, I ovationed for 5 mins, I conditioned and my hair felt soft(er) but I wasn't sold. I used it twice more and I noticed I had about an 80% reduction of hair loss post wash/ condition. I've fine hair but a lot of it and I usually collect the fall out and paste it on the shower door to throw in the bin so it doesn't clog up the shower drain. Seriously- a huge difference. I'm constantly tugging on my hair for fall outs to shake them out before they collect on my clothing- again- much less, almost none. This makes no sense at all since the hair falls out when dead right? Natural growth cycle. I've used it 3 times. I'm going to use it 2-3 times a week and see how it goes- but I did have one friend pay me a hair compliment and BF said hair was softer. I'm baffled, I would like to know how it works but the website is cheesy and vague.

Just found this blog - very interesting! My hair isn't thinning but was getting dry and frizzy as I get older. I tried a sulfate free cleanser/conditioner from Sally Beauty Supply called Hair One. It's amazing. My hair is soft, manageable and stays nice for 3-4 days. I used to wash almost every day. I'm Caucasian so I don't know how it would work for everyone but I'm pretty impressed. It's sort of like a very expensive product called Wen. (at less than half the price)

NO, it didn't work! I've used a lot of products and I returned this one. I really feel that it's a ploy. The shampoo was awful and the "cell therapy" and "rinse" left my hair dull and lifeless. I have gone back to using my standby...Loreal Lisse Extreme. You will love it! :) Don't waste your time or money ladies...

I have been using ovation for appx a month and yes I have seen a decrease in hair loss I only use the cell therapy my question is does the shampoo contain hormones I have read the ingredients but I don't understand any of it..I realized for the first time I haven't started my period (NO I AM NOT PREGNANT) lol I have always had a regular period the shampoo is called OVATION from ovary I am concerned it may contain hormones to stimulate the hair growth...just like birth control in some women it promotes hair growth unfortunately facial not on the scalp..I just wanted to know if anyone has had this side effect note again that i know i am not pregnant...thanks

The product comes from a company that makes shampoo for horses. That should send up a red flag. I would even dare say that this product is animal tested. I know im a guy, and probably the only guy commenting amongst all the women here but, this product is marketed for both men and women. My question is why someone would want to use horse shampoo??. There has to be a much better product out there that isnt associated with an animal of any kind.

I've been using the Ovation sustem for 6 weeks. I have color treated hair. I just had my hair cut and colored this week and my girl was very impressed with the condition of my hair compared to the past. It is softer and has the appearance and feel of being thicker. I'm not saying it grew me more hair, but it is definatly healthier. I have used it exclusivly, and will stick with it. however dur to its cost, I will be switching to 3 times a week at the most.

I just decided to try this out. I've used it for 2-3 weeks now. All that I've noticed is that my hair is not as dry as it used to be. My natural texture seems to be coming back. I never knew this product was from a company who specialized in horse care. Looks like I'll be searching for a good natural shampoo and conditioner. I only purchased the 6oz bottle...so once that is all gone, I'll decide if I want to keep using the product. Right now, I'm not sold.

Hi, I've been natural for about 1 1/2 months now and I am loving it. I did the "Big Chop" and now I have become a product junkie - trying to find the best product for my natural cotton-curly nappy hair. I bought the Ovation Hair product system because of my fine hair....and was hoping to get some thickening results... It's too early to tell as I have only used it once. However, I do not like the sulfate ingredient in the shampoo...I had been using the Mizani True Textures color-safe cream shampoo - sulfate-free! - Great product!

I don't think I will continue to use the Ovation shampoo, but I will continue the Cell Therapy and the Creme Rinse. I will get back to you with some feedback/results on Ovation.

I wanted to add that the reason why I decided to try Ovation is because I have a friend who tried it and stands behind the product 100 percent... But that isn't necessarily the case for everyone else. My friend decided to go natural as well and chop all of her perm off back in Jan. 2010 (less than 1/2 an inch) and purchased Ovation to kick start her hair growth. Her hair length is now 12 inches long - not exaggeration, but facts. Her natural hair is absolutely beautiful... but then again I do realize that what may not work for some may work for others.

This product line was actually created for cancer patients to help grow their hair back. i only used it for about a month and i didnt notice a difference but the girl that does my hair said that it grew a lot in between visits (about 6 weeks). now i am starting to see a difference and the length of my hair. I still follow my normal routine but started incorperating the cell therapy each week, in place of a deep conditioner. I will use leave the cell thearpy on over night and wash it out in the morning. My hair is softer, stronger and getting longer.

Hello everyone, I've been using Ovation for about four months and absolutely love it!!Several months ago, I notice my hair was becoming really thin and was losing my hair a lot. My hair know is shiny, longer , and fuller. I've had so many great compliments about my hair. Several of my friends are actually going to buy the product. I'm so happy with this product!

There is a far better product out there and it is the NIOXIN line.
It has product for all types of hair and all the attendant problems.
Several years ago I lost a lot of my fine hair and started using Nioxin and it restored my hair and made it thicker and now I don't have to use/wear any wigs or hairpieces.
Give it a try. It costs a lot less.

OMG!! HA HA HA!!! What ive been telling people all along about this junk product! These White folk dun lost they livin mind with this mess. Black people need to stay away from this product!!! Babe Savage Hair Co. has dont their research. But I mean come on, this stuff HAS to be animal tested. If you think it isnt then you are the fool. This company has always been exclusive to ANIMALS not humans. If you guys still believe the Cell Therapy hype? I feel bad for you.

The Happy Chemist said...

Old School C,

Im not sure what med/pharm school you attended or where you received your chemistry degree, but let me remind you of something you should've learned your first day in a science class...ANYWHERE. 1) We as humans are in the animal kingdom; there is negligible difference in animals in terms of the nutrients we need for health sustenance. So the idea that a related product for horses or that the company makes products for species besides humans is truly pointless. 2) The company that you claim has done their "research" is hardly what we in the science community call research. What you should have learned in, lets say a statistics class, is that you have to mindful of who puts out the research. Clearly this company, if you bothered to check out their website, potentially gains from every customer they steer away from this product via fearmongering. 3) Why are you even on this blog? There are many people who are dealing with the devastating and humiliating reality of hair loss. We don't need the energy that you bring. 4) If you seem to know the creators, the chemists, and the biologists, why don't you ask them? (You mentioned that "these white folks dun lost their mind"; OBVIOUSLY you have some idea of who the design team is...). Lastly, the American Hair Loss Assoc. doesn't advocate or deny any brand name product. They do however, echo what we know through research about the chemicals (Minoxidil, etc) in products such as Rogaine.

To everyone else: Thank you for respectfully sharing your genuine experiences, and leaving post that MEANINGFULLY impact other's decision to try or not!

PJD, Thanks for creating the blog!

The product is junk PERIOD, I dont need to be a chemist to know that. You guys can put that garbage in your hair if you want to, go ahead.

Old School C said...

So, I took the "Happy Chemist's" advice and sent an inquiry to the president of Ovation Cell Therapy. I could give a sh** who the Design Team is but, they did give me a little info on whats in that mess. To be honest, the stuff they use in their product is no different than what is used in Nioxin; another company that specializes in hairloss. I talked to a lady named Kimberly, and she answered my questions. She wasnt willing to go into details on all the chemicals used so, who knows if she was blowing smoke or not, ya know. I told her that im a big skeptic because of their rep with Animal Hair Care, and she totally understood that. Ovation Hair has a sister company that caters exclusively to animals. I still believe I made a valid point about animals and humans being different in the context of hair care so bump what the F the Happy Chemist is talking about. I know im not the only one here who is particular about what us Black folk put in our hair. And I do believe there are several less expensive and much better products out there that have no ties to horses. Ovation Cell Therapy is really not that special to spend what they charge. I would go with Nioxin or Design Essentials.

K, I tried Ovation on last night, and I have gray hair in my head which I always use a semi rinse, not perm color in my hair. And why did my hair turn PINK! Now my gray hair's light pink. I tried shampooing several times and it's still there. My hair is natural and I've always took care of it, just wanted it thicker and a little longer. I don't know why it turned my hair this color, never have I had this problem before with any product that I've used. I would advise anyone to check this product out before they try it!

Hi PJD! I had been looking into Ovation and after reading your review decided not to spend the money to try it. I too am concerned with staying away from the sulfates and parabens and such. I try very hard to keep my beauty products as natural as possible. I was using Aveda damage remedy because I could get it at cost where I worked, when I stopped working there I decided to make a change. I recently purchased Carol's Daughter from Sephora and when you order on-line they allow you to choose samples to receive with your purchase. I chose to receive Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner. Let me just say WOW! I washed and conditioned in the shower, put no other products in my hair, blew it dry and the flat-iron slid over my hair as if it were silk. It was shiny and beautiful. I would not go back to Aveda after this and I did like the damage remedy results. The only drawback is that it's a bit costly, but in my opinion, totally worth it! Has anyone tried J Beverly HIlls? It was the other company I came across in my search for hair care products.

Don't have a comment on the product, just trying to see what others are saying. Been hearing about Ovation since last year, but don't know anyone personally who has tried it or knows of anyone who has tried it. I'm a victim of aging hair- dry, brittle, thinning, won't curl. I've tried a number of shampoo/conditioner/oral supplemtns without succuss. I'm a 54 y/o BF just trying to get my lustrous locks back. All suggestions are appreciated. HB

I have actually been using the product for about 3 weeks. I don't know if it has changed anything being that my hair is healthy anyway... but it seems to stop growing when it gets to my shoulders. Anyway - personally, I like the shampoo (and there aren't many I haven't tried... very expensive down to upper drugstore), anyway... I like it, and will stick with it for about 6 months to see - the jury is out until then. Thanks. Vicki

Hi PJD. Thanks for the blog. I am a new subscriber. I have been dealing with hair loss for over 9 years since the birth of my oldest son. I resulted to wigs, weaves, braids to try and camouflauge the excessive thinning/baldness in the crown of my head. After every product use known to man (okay I am exaggerating) but I have had my fair share of regrowth products: Organic Root Stimulator, Rogaine, Nioxin, Empress Regrowth..I have had it!

I went to dermatologist and was given injection shots and told to use the topical cream and follow up in 30 days. Not once did I get any diagnosis other than being told that I have alopecia. Nor was I tested to see if the injection shots were the best form of treatment (they were not, they caused severe headaches). I refused to I use the cream. I immediately called and dermatologist basically told me to stop using the cream and said that I should use Rogaine or consider hair replacement surgery. Never once did he suggest to do a biopsy or anything. I was so done with that.

So I started doing my own research on hair loss and surprisingly found tons of information about the different types of alopecia! Being a bit fearful of dermatologist I started using products promoting hair growth (as mention above). I am faithful when it comes to trying products. Usually I give it 3-6 months trial period then wait 30 days before trying something new. Not sure it that was long enough for each one but I had nothing to lose. But a lot of knowlede to gain. What works for some definitely does not work for others. Bottom line I have to find out what has caused my hair loss. I am going to see a new dermatologist in about 3 days and made the decision that I will shave my head after the appt (I am looking like Fire Marshall Bill right about now, lol - so thank god for the lace fronts).

I am considering use of Ovation Cell Therapy but not until after dermatologist diagnosis and will keep you posted with my progress. FYI I called Ovation as well and was told that as long as your hair follicles are dead the product will not work for your. But if they are dormaint or damaged your hair will grow back. Also if you discontinue use your hair will not fall back out; but do take care of it.

I really don't think that there is one perfect product line simply because everyone's hair is different and reacts differently.

Thank you for your blog site and I will keep you posted if the Ovation Cell Therapy works for me or not. I will be following up soon!

I've been using Aveda products for years and love them, and im sorry to burst your bubble, but Aveda shampoos have sodium laureth sulfate in them too. Haven't you ever read the bottle? That's what makes any shampoo get all sudsy and bubbly on your hair.

Dont we need the suds to break up the dirt and oil on the hair and scalp?

I used Ovation Cell Therapy and it seriously damaged my hair! Worse the that, it dried my hair out so badly that what's left looks like straw. I have much less hair now than I did before I used the product! I tried to contact the company, but they've ignored me. They did not honor their 100% satisfaction guarantee. I checked with my doctor and he said I'm healthy and I should not be losing this much hair. He says the problem is Ovation. Beware!

Old School C said...

Wow, sorry to hear about that. Ive contacted Ovation myself and grilled them about the chemicals that they use. Of course they didnt give me all the trade secrets but they did give me quite a bit of info. I still wont be trying this product. Id rather use Nioxin.

"A great hair experience", this is what I had after two weeks of waiting for the results. New growth. So fast I was haveing touch ups about every two weeks with no hair damage from the chemicals of the relaxer. I wasn't looking for a quick fix for my hair . My hair is thin and is very sensitive to anything new. I asked my hair person, who does hair for celebrities, if she had ever used this before. She indicated she had not. I brought it for her to put on my hair and since that time she has been very impressed. My only advise to those of you who do your own hair , GET A LICENSED HAIRDESIGNER. Some things cannot and should not be used by amateur's.

I see you posted this a LONG TIME AGO. But i wanted to tell you that it worked really well for me. I never actually used the shampoo but i did use the creme rinse conditioner and the Cell Therapy. ad my hair grew and it was significantly thicker.. which is what I wanted.
I was more than skeptical when i started using it, but I plan on buy the cell therapy again. ( as soon as i'm not sooo broke.. food is more important than hair product. lol!

Any recommendation on what a good shampoo is? I color my hair and it is down to my waist. I have always had fly away frizzies and have thin hair. Let me know.

I gotta say, the cell therapy works and the creme rinse makes my hair feel better than any other product.

The cell therapy grew my edges back silky and wavy, after years of brushing them to death. I didn't use the product the way the bottle suggests. Instead, I mixed it with a little oil (olive oil, jojoba, whatever I had in the house) and oiled my scalp with it every other day. I used the creme rinse as a leave-in/styling aid. The results were remarkable.

My hair didn't grow super-long or anything, but it was healthy.

FYI - no your new hair growth doesn't fall out if you stop using it.

Also, chemotherapy patients have used it with great success, so it may be a god-send for someone experiencing hair loss due to meds. Good luck!

My wife recently started taking thyroid medicine and has noticed that she is starting to loose more hair than usual. Have any of you had an experience with this and are there any hair products that can help reduce the hair lose?

black_ice said...

@ Concerned Husband I was diagnosed with a hyper-thyroid...what I learned is that once the hormonal balance is back in the body, the shedding (or falling out) stops. I waited until after my thyroid was stable before trying new products. This & other products may help reduce the shedding, but the problem is the body....not the hair or hair shaft. The thyroid disease has to be addressed first.

I love ovation! I don't know where you learned to wash your hair but you shampoo and then condition. Any shampoo will leave your hair hard to comb. Shampoo is for cleaning, conditioner is for conditioning. If you had watched the Ovation video it actually says to shampoo then condition then comb.

I just found this blog. I've been using Ovation now for about three months. I had some pretty bad hair loss after a medical issue after my son was born and then a LOT of hair loss after my daughter was born. I waited to do anything until my daughter was about a year and a half. Therefore allowing enough time (according to my docs) for my body to adjust to post-baby. I LOVE it!! I know my hair is growing faster and I can tell there is less fall-out in the shower and when I flat iron. It is shinier. I am tempted however to try Nioxin. Although I've heard that once you start you can't stop...fall out. Does anyone know about that???

Ann, formal product junky >
for all of u out there, cut through the try out period & jump into using a product called;firm T shampoo & jajoba oil plus there is a spray bottle of some ferminated smelling something, the sellers name is paul oberdorff, in newyork.
i think the company's name is nms.
u see i used this product many years ago, & i know it instantly stopped the hair falling, & the guy garanties dubble the money back if not satisfied.i noticed after one week my hair was'nt coming down as much in the shawer or when combing. when i finished the product & felt that i got the shedding under control, i used the niaxon ever since regardless the sls, the scalp thearapy is great for massaging ure scalp when u have that stiff painfull feeling in scalp, & the mint in it just feels like your scalp is breathing it in. although its pricy when bought from that guy & the little oil thing which comes with it is realy small like a try out size so u'd have to buy the real size bottle over the kit,& ya it used to be that there's a vitamine bottle for hair thats offered & bought seperatly. from my experiece, yes u can buy bioton from gnc & it will be cheaper & heard people i know saying that it helped them.also that guy hes like a junky product as well, it seemed to me he try's to find good broducts try them & if he thinks they realy work he sells, cause he seems sure with his garantee. so i guess he gets that product from main company, which i think it will be cheaper if bought straight from them , & thats what i was going to find out, but thought let me see what people say about ovation, maybe if good i'll try it, as my hair is been shedding so much after doing karatine sraightner at a supposenly a professional. & that firm T product is something i used years ago, then my hair was fine in terms of thickness & not shedding crazily,so after finishing it i didnt puchase more as i said & went to the niaxon. niaxon doesnt stop hair falling or is for fixing bald area's, but if ure hair is okey & no problems, its a good daily shampoo in my openion with the scalp thearapy as u put it on the rest of ure hair as well to soften it, but focus on the scalp & massaging more & its gona go on the rest of hair anyway, but if have long hair then u wanto add to it, & i foud with it it doesnt way the hair down,& u dont have to clarify or keep changing shampoos & conditioners as with most other products. so its good as an every day product after u fix the problem of shedding. so u might wanto check the first one i mentioned , & since it was a while ago foe me,i would have to look for the ordering info as u'd have to. so try Firm T products from either paul oberdorff in new york, or Firm T company direct. now that i read what have about the ovation, i will defenetly not bother with neither the shapoo, cell thearapy or conditioner. i will find the info of the Firm t products & go on it to stop this rediculous hair falling. so good luck to u all,& excuse any misspells as english is a second language for me.

If you have fine hair, be careful. After three uses, I started finding more hair in the drain and my comb. The loss appeared to be from breakage near the scalp. It will take me many months to try and grow it out. I should have read more online reviews before trying it. While they refunded my money, they can't give me my hair back. Not worth the risk in my assessment.

I use Nutress Hair products and they are a much more affordable replacement for the same effects as ovation therapy. The Nutress protein pack and stop break products has made my hair so strong and? healthy, without the risk and cost of ovation cell therapy. Check them out!

Mane 'n' Tail is not designed only for horses. It is designed to be used on either or, therefore, it is a better product for the horses than many others because it is up to the standards for human use. I know this because I have been around horses all my life. Just wanted to clarify that.
